Prostate Biopsy
Ultrasound and MRI guided prostate biopsy
Prostate biopsy is a procedure used to remove samples of suspicious tissue from the prostate for study and detection of disease.
The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland in men that produces a fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.
Prostate biopsy uses ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guidance and a needle to obtain these tissue samples.
The ultrasound probe used for prostate biopsies is about the size of a finger.
During the procedure, the doctor inserts the probe into the rectum and removes tissue samples using a spring-loaded hollow- needle biopsy device.
Currently this procedure is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of prostate cancer, although doctors also often use this procedure to tell the difference between cancer and an enlarged prostate a common condition in older men.
The procedure is performed by a doctor who specializes in the urinary system and male sexual organs (urologist)
How is the procedure?
Once in the office, the doctor will ask you to lie on your side with your knees close to your chest. You may be asked to lie on your stomach and after cleaning the area and applying the gel, the doctor will gently insert a thin ultrasound probe into your rectum.
Transrectal ultrasonography uses sound waves to create images of the prostate. The doctor will use the images to identify the area to numb with an injection to reduce discomfort associated with the biopsy. In addition, the ultrasound images will also be used to guide the prostate biopsy needle to the correct place.
Once the area is numbed and the biopsy device is in place, the doctor will take thin, cylindrical sections of the tissue with a spring-loaded needle.
Generally, the procedure causes a brief sore feeling each time the spring-loaded needle takes a sample.
Finally, the doctor may focus on a suspicious area to take samples for biopsy or may take samples from different parts of the prostate.
Typically, 10 to 12 tissue samples are taken, and the entire procedure usually takes about 20 minutes.
