Vasectomy
Vasectomy is a simple surgery, which can be done in an office, hospital or clinic.
During the process, the doctor cuts or blocks the small ducts (tubes) in a man´s scrotum that carry sperm so they cannot leave his body.
If the sperm cannot come out, pregnancy cannot occur either, which is why it is one of the safest contraceptive methods today if you do not want to have children.
The procedure is very quick, and you go home the same day.
There are two types of vasectomy:
Vasectomy with scalpel (with cut):
During a scalped vasectomy, the doctor makes one or two small cuts in the skin of the scrotum. Then, through these cuts, it blocks the tubes that carry sperm, called the vas deferens. Sometimes a tiny part of each duct is removed.
No-scalpel (no cut) vasectomy:
It consist of f a small operation that is performed without a scalped, with local anesthesia, making a puncture in the skin of the scrotal sac above where the testicles are located, through which the vas deferens are located and tied, site by where the sperm pass NO-cut methods have less risk of infection and other complications, and generally takes less time to heal.
Vasectomy will no change the way it feels to have an orgasm or ejaculate, and the semen will look, feel and taste the same as it did before the vasectomy.
The only thing that will change is that there will be no pregnancy. A few months after your vasectomy, your doctor will do simple test called a semen analysis to check if there are still sperm in your semen. For the test, the patient is asked to masturbate into a glass or use a special condom when having sex to obtain a semen sample.
After this, the doctor will inform you when the semen no longer has sperm and the vasectomy is already working as a contraceptive method, meanwhile you should not have unprotected sex until the doctor says it is safe.
Care after Vasectomy
Having a vasectomy is usually very safe. However, like all medical procedures, they require post-operative care.
The most common are:
- Wear underwear that supports the testicles so they won´t move around too much
- Take the mecation your doctor has prescribed
- Applying ice to the genitals helps reduce inflammation and relieve pain
- Avoid exertion or exercise for a week after surgery
