Surgery for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (TUR)

Transurethral resection of the prostate is a surgery that is performed to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate.

This procedure is done by inserting an instrument called a rectoscope through the tip of the penis and into the tube that carries urine from the bladder (urethra).

The rectoscope helps the doctor see and trim excess prostate tissue that is blocking the flow of urine.

This procedure is usually done as an option for men who have moderate to severe urinary problems that have not responded to medications.

TURPS helps reduce urinary symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), such as:

-Frequent and urgent need to urinate

-Difficulty starting urination

-Slow urination (prolonged)

-More frequent urination at night

-Stop and start urinating again

-Feeling of not being able to empty the bladder complete

-Urinary tract infection

And like any surgical intervention, it also has its risks, which can be:

Temporary difficulty urinating

You may experience frequent urination and pain when urinating for a few days or transient loss of small amounts or urine.

Urinary infection

Some patients may require antibiotics for urine infection after surgery.

Dry orgasm

A common and long-term consequence of any type of prostate surgery is the release of semen into the bladder and not through the penis during ejaculation.

This affectation is also known as retrograde ejaculation, dry orgasm is not painful and, in general, does not affect sexual pleasure.

However, it can interfere with the ability to father a child.
