Prostatitis

Prostatitis is the swelling and inflammation of the prostate, wich is a walnut-sized gland located just below the bladder in men. This gland is responsible for producing semen, nourishing and transporting sperm.

This inflammation usually causes pain or difficulty when urinating and usually affects men of all ages but tends to be more common in men in their 50s.

Prostatitis is usually caused by a bacterial infection of the prostate gland, so any bacteria that can cause a urine tract infection can lead to acute bacterial prostatitis.

Depending on the causes, prostatitis can come on gradually or suddenly and can improve quickly, either on its own or with treatment. However other types of prostatitis can last up to months or become recurrent, which is known as chronic prostatitis.

Acute prostatitis can come back or turn into chronic prostatitis.
