Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted disease (STDs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that are passed from one person to another through sexual intercourse.

Contact is usually vaginal, oral or anal. However, they can sometimes be transmitted through other intimate physical contact.

This is because some STDs, like herpes and HPV, are spread through skin-to-skin contact. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) previously known as venereal diseases.

They are very common and many people often have no symptoms.

That´s why its important to get tested regardless of whether or not you have symptoms of STDs, because without treatment, STDs can cause serious health problems or become more complicated.

The more common STDs are:

Gonorrhea:
Sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterial infection. It often has no symptoms, but it is easy to treat once diagnosed.

Syphilis:
Syphilis is a common bacterial infection. It is easily cured with medication but can be dangerous if left untreated.

Human papilloma virus (HPV):
It is a sexually transmitted disease, usually harmless and that goes away on its own. But some types can lead to cancer.

Acquired immunodeficiency virus (HIV):
HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. It is an infection that destroys the immune system and can cause AIDS. There is no cure, but there are treatments that can help you stay healthy.

Chlamydia:
Sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterial infection. It often has no symptoms, but it is easy to treat once diagnosed.

Herpes:
Sexually transmitted disease that affects the genitals and the mouth. It causes sores or blisters and there is no cure, but the symptoms can be treated.

As we can see all these diseases are transmitted through sexual contact. On the other hand, for the contagion to take place through kissing, the person must have blood or wounds in the oral cavity. Contagion through saliva is very unlikely, however, cases have been reported in this way.  

Symptoms and Diagnosis

STDs don´t always have symptoms, or they may only cause mild symptoms. For the same reason, it is possible to have and infection and not know it, although it can still be transmitted to other people.
